Screw it, Wear the Skinny Jeans!

Listen, I may lose all of my credibility, but nobody can tell me I have to toss out my skinny jeans. Or shame me for continuing to wear these precious pants I have grown to love.

Is there anything more rock n’ roll then throwing fashion trends to the wind and wearing what the heck you want to wear? It is about attitude, lifestyle and fashion, which all blur together to create a beautiful, bada$$ persona, in my opinion.

As you can see from my fashion photos- I do not care. I wear what I want to wear. Skinny jeans are out? Says who?

Well, according to Elle magazine in January 2024, skinny jeans are no longer in fashion. Interestingly, the article has been updated and edited to a 2024 denim trend theme that includes skinny jeans. I wonder if readers were not happy. Who knows?

NPR.org has also posted an article on skinny jeans being out of fashion, but leaving the door open for a return from the dead like Beetlejuice or wide leg pants that are now in style a la the movie Clueless.

Maybe it’s because I am a millennial that I feel okay in my decision to wear the skinny jeans. In high school, I remember I had a pair of bell bottoms (No, I was not born in the 70s era!) and to this day, they are probably one of my favorite articles of clothing that I have ever owned.  

The skinny jean originated in about the ‘60s, while the modern version we are used to seeing started in the early 2000s. Remember those colorful denims, tucked into the slouchy boots, topped off with a wild oversized infinity scarf… ahhh, the good days!

I never was a trendy girl. I don’t think you have to follow a trend because you are afraid of standing out for wearing what you like to wear. It seems there are some fashion choices that are only popular and trendy because pop culture says so. People don’t actually like it.

If you like it, wear it.

One of the most incredible themes of this website is celebrating our fashion choices. Wearing what we love. Feeling comfortable in what we wear.

Rock n’ roll fashion is all about being bold and taking risks. Wearing skinny jeans is not exactly toeing the line of insane fashion choices, but it is a small way to push back on standards pushed our way. As Slash said: Rock n’ roll is about attitude and rebellion. It’s supposed to be fun and spontaneous. My very small foray into defiance: I’m keeping my skinny jeans.

Do I worry I will look outdated and uncool because I am wearing clothing that isn’t deemed trendy? Or (OMG) I am old because I’m a millennial and not part of the Gen Z world that is probably responsible for this clothing burial? No, because I carry myself with a confidence and an I-don’t-care-attitude. Maybe it is because I grew up in an era with risk-taking style icons like Punky Brewster, Blossom, TLC, and David Bowie.

I love skinny jeans. I want my pants to look like they were painted on my legs like Axl Rose in the ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ music video… or really any ‘80s hair metal band.

They’re here to stay for me.
